According to the Ministry, the most deaths were recorded in three provinces southwest of Marrakech - Al-Hauz (349 deaths), Taroudant (271) and Chichaua (91). In the province of Marrakech, 13 people were killed, in five more regions — from three to several dozen.
As Sky News Arabia noted, the earthquake lasted for several minutes, during the tremors, residents took to the streets. Al Jazeera reported that the historical part of the city was partially destroyed, recognized as a UNESCO heritage. Many world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, have sent condolences to King Mohammed VI bin al-Hassan of Morocco. "Russia shares the feelings and grief of the friendly people of Morocco. I ask you to convey words of sympathy and support to the relatives and friends of the victims, as well as wishes for a speedy recovery to all those affected by this natural disaster," his message reads.
The last major earthquake in Morocco occurred in 2004. Its magnitude was 6.5, then about 600 people died.
