The Russian Foreign Ministry urged to "stop the bloodshed" in Nagorno-Karabakh

Russian Foreign Ministry calls for cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh

The conflicting parties should immediately cease hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh and exclude civilian casualties, it follows from the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The ministry stressed that it is necessary to return to the implementation of the trilateral agreements, as well as "stop the armed confrontation and do everything possible to ensure the rights and security of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh."

The fate of the settlement of the situation in the region was influenced by Armenia's recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh as part of the territory of Azerbaijan in October 2022 and May 2023, the Foreign Ministry noted. This changed the fundamental conditions under which the 2020 agreements were signed, as well as the position of the Russian peacekeeping contingent, according to the department.

According to data from Stepanakert at 22:30, as a result of the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, 27 people were killed, including two civilians. The number of victims exceeded 200 people, more than 7 thousand citizens were evacuated.

Azerbaijan explained the start of the "anti-terrorist operation" on September 19 by the fact that Armenian forces have been building up combat power there in recent months, mining the territory and shelling Azerbaijani positions. The Defense Ministry assured that they are not firing at civilians.

Armenia has appealed to the UN Security Council and Russian peacekeepers to take "clear and unambiguous steps to stop the aggression."

Russia and the European Union called on Azerbaijan to stop the operation. France demanded to convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
