Pashinyan promised full ratification of the Rome Statute in Parliament

Pashinyan: Armenian parliament will fully ratify the Rome Statute

The Armenian parliament will fully ratify the Rome Statute, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a speech at the National Assembly (the country's legislative body), reports News.am .

"The Rome Statute will be fully ratified, and it has nothing to do with Armenian-Russian relations. This concerns Armenia's security issues," Pashinyan said.

The Rome Statute is the founding document of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Armenia signed it in 1999, but has not ratified it. In 2004, the Constitutional Court of the country considered the contract contrary to the basic law.

The Armenian government began the process of its ratification at the end of 2022, explaining that Yerevan will be able to raise the issue of Azerbaijan's war crimes during the armed conflict between the two countries in a new status.

On March 24, the Constitutional Court of the country recognized the Rome Statute as corresponding to the basic law. On September 1, the draft ratification was sent to the Armenian Parliament.

On March 17, the ICC announced the issuance of an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Children's Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova on suspicion of "illegal deportation" of children "from the occupied territories of Ukraine" to Russia in the period from February 24, 2022. If Armenia joins the Rome Statute, it will be obliged to arrest Putin in the event of his visit.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow considers Yerevan's plans to recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC unacceptable.
