Bulgaria to stop supplies of Ukrainian sunflower amid mass protests

Bulgaria will limit the supply of Ukrainian sunflowers against the background of mass protests of farmers if their quantity is not regulated by a quota. This was stated by Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Nedkov, the BTA news agency reports.

According to the Prime Minister, negotiations with his Ukrainian counterpart will be held in the near future, at which the quota for the import of sunflower seeds will be settled. "Negotiations are also underway on other products," Denkov added.

The Prime Minister stressed that the quality of Ukrainian products meets the requirements, but if violations are detected, the import will be stopped.

The protests in Bulgaria began on September 18 against the background of the authorities' refusal to extend the embargo on the import of Ukrainian grain. Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, which also introduced temporary measures, maintained the ban on supplies at the national level.

About 26 branch organizations of the agricultural sector took part in the actions. The chairman of the Bulgarian Farmers' Union, Georgy Stoyanov, stated that the protests would continue until the farmers' demands were met.

Among them is the extension of the ban on the import of grain from Ukraine and the payment of compensation for losses due to market distortions against the background of the military operation. Denkov stressed that the Cabinet of Ministers will soon propose a solution to the existing problems.
