The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry refutes the reports that appeared in the Armenian segment of social networks about the shelling of a convoy of Russian peacekeepers who are evacuating residents from Nagorno-Karabakh.
"The information spread in Armenian social networks about the shelling of the Armenian Armed Forces of the column of the Russian peacekeeping contingent evacuating residents of Armenian origin is disinformation," Sputnik Azerbaijan quotes the agency's message.
The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry shared a video of strikes on several trenches, shelters and military columns of the Armenian forces, as well as footage of the destruction of an artillery installation of the Armenian Armed Forces.
On September 19, Azerbaijan announced the start of an "anti-terrorist" operation in Nagorno-Karabakh, explaining that Armenian forces have been building up combat power there in recent months, mining the territory and shelling Azerbaijani positions. The Ministry of Defense of the country stated that it strikes the positions of the Armenian Armed Forces with the use of precision weapons and does not fire at civilian infrastructure.
By the evening, the Defense Ministry reported on taking control of more than 60 positions of the Armenian forces. Hikmet Hajiyev, adviser to the President of Azerbaijan on foreign policy, said that Baku is ready for negotiations with the Armenians of Karabakh, but only if they agree to disarmament and surrender.
According to the Ombudsman of Nagorno-Karabakh Geghan Stepanyan, 27 people were killed in the region by 22:30, two of them civilians. The number of wounded exceeded 200. More than 7 thousand people were evacuated from the region, he added.
Yerevan has denied the presence of its military on the territory of Karabakh. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia does not participate in hostilities. Against the background of the Prime Minister's statements, protests broke out in Armenia, protesters demand Pashinyan's resignation.
Russian peacekeepers (about 2 thousand military) are stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh according to the 2020 agreements. After the outbreak of hostilities, they organized the evacuation of civilians from the most dangerous areas. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russian peacekeepers received information about Baku's "anti-terrorist operation" in Nagorno-Karabakh a few minutes before it began.
Against the background of the escalation of the conflict, Armenia appealed to the UN Security Council and Russian peacekeepers to take measures to stop the "aggression of Azerbaijan".
